Another "Social Security" Scam Reported; Identity Theft ****** Fraud Alert #179 ****** Follow-up to Senior Fraud Alert concerning three new “Social Security” scams, here is a fourth one: Members of the Attorney General’s Telemarketing Fraud Prevention Unit have spoken with three North Carolina consumers this afternoon, each of whom reported calls from people pretending to be officials of the Social Security Administration. The consumers were told that they had won a medical care grant that would be paid out in increments of $500 per month for six months. The callers then requested sensitive financial information, including bank account numbers, in order to ensure payment of the supposed grants. They would not explain how the grant program supposedly worked. The Federal Trade Commission has received similar reports from consumers throughout the country in recent months. The callers are reported to be very persistent and to possess heavy foreign accents.
