Scammers Posing as FEMA Officials Lurking
in Western North Carolina

The Asheville Citizen-Times reports that crooks posing as FEMA representatives have contacted hurricane victims in at least three Western North Carolina counties (Avery, Watauga, Yancey) asking for bank account information. Crooks wearing clothing with FEMA insignia have been handing out fliers also asking for account information.

  • FEMA does not call people and try to obtain back account information.
  • FEMA does take bank account information when victims register for FEMA assistance so that victims can receive a direct deposit from FEMA.
  • Victims initiate contact with FEMA, not the other way around.

Victims are advised to ask to see official FEMA identification, a laminated FEMA badge, if approached and to contact FEMA directly. A shirt or cap with the FEMA logo is not considered reliable identification.
