Thieves Impersonating Representatives of District Attorney's Office

Task Force Member Vivian Vance, a detective with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Fraud Unit, asks that the following incident report be shared with fellow members. It concerns a recent incident wherein thieves gained entry to an older woman's home by claiming to be with the District Attorney's Office. Detective Vance asks to be contacted by agencies that have received reports of similar crimes. Her telephone number is 704-336-8288.

A black male and a black female went to the home of a disabled elderly female. She was alone at home and they told her that they were from the District Attorney’s office. The suspects opened the storm door and let themselves inside. They showed her a picture of a black female and asked if she knew who it was. The suspects told the victim that the female in the picture was supposed to live at that address with her grandmother. They said she had been involved in a bank robbery. The suspects then started to ask if there were other people living in the house and if there were any pistols or revolvers. Then they started asking how much money the victim had. The victim got nervous and told them that she had $300.00 in her purse. The suspects went into the bedroom and took $1049.00 and an ID card from the victim. The suspects pretended to put her money in a white envelope and put it on the table. Then they told the victim that they would call her in 10 minutes. They told her that they were going to call her in order to match the serial numbers with the money that was stolen during the bank robberies involving the girl in the picture. Inside the envelope were small pieces of newspaper.
