US Government Warns Medicare Beneficiaries of Internet, Phone
Scams
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services this week is warning
older consumers and others to be on the lookout for scam artists claiming
an affiliation
with Medicare. The text of that warning appears below. One of the scams described
in the warning is called the "$299 Ring" and appears to be coming
from outside the country. In addition to the federal and local law enforcement
contact numbers listed in the warning, North Carolina consumers who encounter
these fraud artists are encouraged to report them to state officials by calling
1-877-5-NO-SCAM (Consumer Protection Division) or 1-800-443-9354 (Seniors'
Health Insurance Information Program).
