Distraction Theft by Phony Medicare Representatives In follow-up to yesterday’s Alert concerning phony Medicare representatives operating in the Raleigh area, Task Force Member Alton Price with the Catawba Co. Sheriff’s Department describes for us two very similar incidents that occurred in his county yesterday: On Thursday (January 25, 2007) here in Catawba County we had a similar incident to occur. We had two different gentlemen going to seniors’ homes and telling them that they are from Social Security Administration and in one incident they were there to measure their living space in their house so that the senior could get more social security money each month. In the other incident, they were there from the Social Security Administration and wanted to give them $40 extra this month but needed change to give them the money. The lady only had $17 so they left. They are described as 50 - 60 year old men. One is tall and heavy set with medium brown hair and the other has a white beard. Driving a passenger dark blue car. Anyone seeing or hearing of this situation should contact the Sheriff's Office by dialing 911. Get as much description as possible. Please make your senior citizens aware of this scam. Contact Sgt. Alton Price 828-465-8337 for any questions.
