Contractor Banned in
NC Due to Transaction ****** Fraud Alert #168 ******
Wake County Superior Court Judge Abraham Penn Jones yesterday issued a temporary restraining order against a home repair and remodeling contractor whom Attorney General Roy Cooper accused of committing deceptive trade practices on a disabled elderly couple. The contractor, John Shearer of Wake Forest, doing business as Home Remodeling Solutions, promised to remodel one end of the couple’s 1,100 sq. foot home and make it handicapped accessible for $63,000. The job was to last four months. A year later, with the couple having paid the contractor over $124,000, the project is very much incomplete and much of the work that was performed must be re-done. Judge Jones’ restraining order prohibits the contractor from performing repair or remodeling work on any home in North Carolina. Attorney General Cooper is also seeking civil penalties from Shearer and restitution for all home owners he might have deceived or harmed. Other agencies are investigating as well. If you are aware of other home owners who have had unsatisfactory experiences with this contractor, please encourage them to contact the Consumer Protection Division, telephone number 1-877-566-7226 (toll free). ******End of Alert******
