Offering to "Assist" with SSI
******Alert #196 ******
Brian Simpson with the Social Security Administration asks fellow members of the Senior Fraud Task Force to be on the lookout for incidents such as the one described below:
Our office received a scam referral from our 800# service this morning. An 85-year-old woman in Fuquay-Varina received a call yesterday from a man who said he could help her with her SSI. She could not remember if he specifically told her that he was from SSA or not, but she got the impression from him that he was from SSA. He told her that he and another person were going to visit her at her home today between Noon and 3:00pm. The caller's SSI recently stopped when she became entitled to a higher Social Security benefit, but we are unsure whether the scammer was aware of that before calling the woman. We have already notified our local Office of Inspector General agents and advised the woman to contact her local law enforcement. Please spread the word to the NC Consumer Fraud Task Force and let us know if you receive any similar reports. Thanks, BRIAN SIMPSON ******End of Alert******
