Trade Practices Alert: Insurance Agents Reportedly Coming to Seniors' Doors to Sign Them Up for "ObamaCare"

Task Force Co-Chair Stephanie Bias, with the Department of Insurance’s Seniors Health Insurance Information Program (“SHIIP”), wants her Senior Fraud Task Force colleagues to know that there have already been reports of unscrupulous sales persons exploiting recent news headlines in order to sell insurance products to seniors who may not need them. Similar incidents were reported after enactment of Medicare Part D a few years ago. Below is part of a message describing one incident that was sent to Stephanie by a counterpart in the central part of the US. No such incidents have been reported in North Carolina.

“Have a report from the St. Charles area that insurance agents are showing up at Seniors’ homes explaining that they are with ObamaCare, representing the Federal Government, trying to sell insurance policies. They would not give a name, address or phone number but stated they were going to call the Attorney General’s office and report it.”

Stephanie suggests that such incidents be reported to the NC Senior Medicare Patrol program at SHIIP, tel. 1-800-443-9354.
