Trade Practices Alert: Callers Wanting to Draft Bank Accounts for Medicare ******Alert #241****** Task Force Co-Chair Caroline Farmer passes along the following report she received today from Richard L. Jurgensen, Vice President and Director of Security for Community One Bank in Asheboro. It pertains to callers claiming that older consumers owe money to Medicare or Medicaid and need to provide their bank account information so that their accounts might be drafted. Similar reports have been lodged by citizens of other states. Caroline’s fellow Co-Chair, Stephanie Bias of the Dept. of Insurance, confirms that neither Medicare nor Medicaid would attempt to draft someone’s account over the phone. It may well be that the company name that displayed on the Ashboro bank customer’s caller ID screen was “spoofed” by the would-be scammers. Caroline. Just a short heads-up on a report from one of our customers. Thought it may correlate to other reports your office might have received. Our customer reported to us that she received a phone call yesterday (04/13) from a person claiming to be from Medicare or Medicaid, and asking for her bank account information in order to charge her account for $396.00. She refused to reveal her information and terminated the call. Her caller ID indicated the call came from "J2 Global Commu", and displayed a number of 718-374-5145. There is a Hollywood, California based company called "J2 Global Communications, Inc.", but the number displayed traces back to an unpublished land-line in South Richmond Hill, NY (suburb of NYC).
