The Chatham County Council on Aging and the NC Division of Aging and Adult Services share the following warning about possible identity thieves calling with a pitch about free glucose meters. In adjoining Randolph County, officials report that an older citizen was badgered by one of these callers until he agreed to accept the meter and complied with the caller’s request for his Social Security number. The caller hung up as soon as the man gave his Social Security number.

Chatham Residents Warned about Diabetes Telemarketing Calls

PITTSBORO—The Chatham County Council on Aging alerts residents to a phone calls from someone marketing diabetes testing equipment. The marketer is asking for personal health information and addresses over the phone.

“We remind residents that they should never give out personal health information and address over the phone…not in any circumstance,” said Angel Dennison, director of the Council on Aging.

The Council on Aging itself received one of these calls today, so that it appears to be a random calling system, Dennison said. “They ask if you have diabetes and then tell you that a company representative can come to the home and show you a better blood testing meter. They then ask for your Medicare number and address.”

If you have caller ID on your phone, it will read: “Important Call.”
