Trade Practice Alert: Durham Police Advisory on Persons Pitching Security Systems

The Durham Police Department has received several reports recently about door-to-door salespeople claiming to sell security systems or system upgrades. This link from the Federal Trade Commission provides more information about these various potential scams -

The Durham Police Department is providing the following crime/scam prevention tips:

  • Ask for the salesperson’s business credentials and City of Durham vendor permit/privilege license
  • Do not let anyone you don’t know into your home
  • Do not provide any personal information
  • Most reputable alarm companies do not go door-to-door to solicit business. If you have any questions about whether the salesman actually works for a specific company, call the company for verification (check your phone book or the Internet for the number; don’t rely on the salesperson)
  • Call 911 to report any suspicious activity and provide descriptions of the people and activity
