TO NC SENIOR CONSUMER FRAUD TASK FORCE MEMBERS ******Alert #298****** The Consumer Protection Division of the North Carolina Attorney General’s Office has received two reports in the past 18 hours of phone calls from a “federal agent” who claims that the call recipients, or members of their families, made illegal drug purchases in the past. In one of the incidents, the caller claimed that the woman’s late husband illegally purchased prescription drugs on-line. In the other, he insinuated that the person had engaged in other illegal drug activities and warned that he possessed a warrant allowing him to search her home. In both instances, the supposed agent became very threatening before the consumers terminated the calls. The calls apparently came from a number with a 970 area code. On-line reports reflect that during the past four years consumers around the country have received similar calls. The phony federal agent eventually demands immediate payment of penalties for the supposedly illegal prescription drug purchases.
