Alternative Exam and Administrator Exam

The Alternative Exam is an exam given to those employees who wish to become supervisors-in-charge, but who do not have their high school diploma or GED.

The Administrator Exam is an this exam used for one of the requirements for becoming an assisted living administrator or family care homes administrator. Please note that this exam is not the only requirement for becoming an approved administrator.

Please email AdultCare.ctu@ncmail.net to sign up for the alternative or administrator exam. Be sure to include your name, phone number, and the date and location of the test you wish to take. When arriving for test, please bring a number two pencil and a picture ID. Do not arrive late.

Test site locations: Test site locations and times are subject to change. You need to contact the Adult Care Licensure Section before going to the site. Please refer to the schedule (PDF, 24 KB) for test times and locations.

Inclement Weather: Testing will be cancelled if weather conditions are considered hazardous for the Adult Care Licensure staff and facility staff. Information on cancellations may be obtained by calling the Adult Care Licensure Section in Asheville at 828-250-3800 or Raleigh at 919-855-3793 or 919-855-3765.

Registration: Pre-registration is not available for the administrator or alternative exam, except for the Asheville testing. Spaces are limited at each test site. You must arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the test time to complete a registration form and to see if space is available.

A valid photo ID is required, ie. Driver’s license, passports and military identification.
