Procedures and Instructions For
Medication Written Exam
The following are the instructions and procedures for the written medication exam. You need to be
familiar with these instructions.
- You will be required to provide a photo ID. Acceptable photo ID's are a drivers license
issued by N.C. or another state, military photo ID, passport or a photo ID issued by the
Division of Motor Vehicles.
- You must arrive on time. Registration will begin 30 to 45 minutes prior to the scheduled
exam time. You must arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled exam time in
order to guarantee your space. Once testing has begun, no one will be admitted to the
testing area.
- Seating for the written examination will be structured to assure your privacy as you take the
examination. You will be seated in a specific area or seat. You may be asked by the exam
coordinator to relocate either before or during the examination. If this occurs, please
relocate as quickly and with as little commotion as possible.
- No materials or personal items will be allowed to be carried into the exam or testing area.
All books, papers, purses, backpacks, book bags, briefcases and other personal items must
be left in your car or in a holding area. (Note: People who have these items in the test room
prior to the beginning of the exam will be allowed to take them to the holding area prior to exam
booklets being issued.) Any personal items left in the holding area will be the responsibility of
the individual. Any personal items observed in the exam or testing room after the exam
begins will be subject to being removed by the exam coordinator.
- All portable communication devices (i.e.: cell phones, pagers) must be turned off inside the
written exam room. If you are on call and leave the exam site, all test materials will be
collected by the exam coordinator. The portion of the exam completed will be graded. You
will not be allowed to complete your written exam.
- No talking, eating, drinking or use of tobacco products will be allowed during the written
exam.
- A test booklet, answer sheet and pencil will be issued individually to each person registered
for the exam. Photo ID’s may also be checked as the exam materials are issued and may be
checked at any time during the exam period. After testing materials are issued, do not open
the test booklet or mark on the answer sheet until you are instructed to do so.
- Do not mark in the test booklet. If you receive a test booklet that has been marked, raise
your hand and the exam coordinator or assistant will check your material and issue new
material as necessary.
- No calculators are allowed during the exam. If you need scratch paper, raise your hand and
ask the exam coordinator or assistant. You must return this paper with your test materials.
- Only rest room breaks will be allowed during the written exam. If you need to visit the rest
room facility, raise your hand and an exam coordinator will collect your test material.
Smoking breaks will not be allowed. Do not carry paperwork out of the room. Do not
return with any paperwork. Only one person at a time will be permitted to leave the
room.
- You may not take notes or other materials from an exam site. You may not compile test
questions following an exam to be used by others as a study guide. This practice will be
considered cheating on the part of the individual gathering the material and the individual
using the material as a study guide. An investigation by the Division of Health Service Regulation
will follow.
- When you have completed the written exam, return all test materials to the exam coordinator
and exit the room. Only one person at a time will approach the coordinator. Please
remain in your seat until the area for returning exam material is clear.
- Time limits for written examinations are: two hours
- If a person is suspected of cheating, the Division of Health Service Regulation will initiate an
investigation.
- Anyone who persist in disruptive behavior during an examination will be asked to leave the
exam site. All exam materials will be collected and the completed portion will be graded.
- Allow 21 days for your results to be processed and mailed to you. Do not call the Adult
Care Licensure Section for results, unless you have not received your results after 21 days from the date you took the exam.
