Survey of Where NCHC Children's Parents Work
Below you will find the first survey of the 100 counties of the state regarding where the parents of NCHC children work. The two highest areas of employment are as factory workers and health care workers. Ranking next are construction workers, city or county employees, restaurant employees, self employed, discount store employees, public school employees, state employees, day care workers, hotel/motel employees, farmers or farm workers, federal employees and military. The "public school employee" category is incomplete because it was added to the survey after the fact. Many counties reported that they had large numbers of workers who worked in retail sales, grocery stores and banks. These individuals, plus those on unemployment, disability or who are social security survivors make up a large portion of the "other" category. This survey was conducted with the population as of May, 2005. This survey shows 1.5 wage earners per child in NC Health Choice. Some workers reported holding more than two jobs.
This survey was done at the request of the NC General Assembly. The 100 county Departments of Social Services were asked to count the number of children whose parents worked in 14 different types of employment (a 15th --public schools--was added later when it was discovered that public school employees do not count themselves as either state or county employees). That information was compiled by the NCHC Coordinator and entered into the attached chart.
In the survey document, whenever the field is blank, the county did not provide the information.
