On October 1, 2005, the NC Division of Medical Assistance implemented a 5-year demonstration waiver project for family planning services for the citizens of NC. The name of the program is BE SMART. This program is designed to reduce unintended pregnancies and improve the wellbeing of children and families in NC by extending eligibility for family planning services to eligible women ages 19 through 55 and men ages 19 through 60 who meet the eligibility requirements for participation.
Provider participation in the Be Smart program is open to all Medicaid enrolled providers whose licensure and accreditations allows them to provide family planning services. There are no additional enrollment requirements for Medicaid providers who are currently enrolled to provide family planning services.
