How the SIS assessment works

A trained SIS interviewer leads a discussion of your need for support in different life activities. In North Carolina, SIS interviewers will be certified by AAIDD, the developers of the SIS. The SIS interviewer is well-trained and should help you feel comfortable.

The SIS interviewer will use the same list of questions for you and everyone else. These questions are about the amount of assistance, if any, you need in each daily life activity area. The SIS interviewer documents how much support you need.

You should attend the SIS meeting and participate with other people who know you very well. A SIS meeting usually takes between 2 to 3 hours. You can take a break during the meeting if you need to.

There are no right or wrong answers to the SIS questions. Explain what your needs are and let people know your abilities when you can. If you do not understand a question, ask the SIS interviewer to explain it. It is important that all answers are accurate and not over or underestimated.

Get Prepared

You can prepare for this assessment by making sure you have what you need to communicate (such as hearing aids or glasses). You can also view this SIS training video Link to site outside of N.C. DHHS created by the State of Washington Division of Developmental Disabilities.

Scheduling SIS Assessments

For this year and early next year, a staff member from the Developmental Disabilities Training Institute (DDTI) Link to site outside of N.C. DHHS in North Carolina will contact you to schedule the SIS meeting. In future years, LME-MCO staff will take over the scheduling responsibility.

After your first SIS assessment this year or next, it will be updated every 2 years for children and 3 years for adults. Now and in the future, your SIS assessment information will be used to develop your Individualized Budget Amount and service plan.
