There are several ways to find a Medicaid doctor, dentist, or other medical provider. Before you make an appointment, be sure to ask if the provider still takes Medicaid patients.
Most Medicaid recipients are enrolled in managed care (Community Care of North Carolina/Carolina ACCESS). This means that you have a medical home with a primary doctor. Your primary doctor will provide you with regular check-ups and preventative services. Your doctor will treat you when you are sick or refer you to a specialist if you need to see one.
Your local County Department of Social Services (DSS) office has a complete list of participating doctors.
You do not need a referral from your primary doctor to see a dentist.

If you are under 21, you must get a referral to see a mental health provider. Please ask your primary doctor, a local management entity (LME), or a Psychiatrist for a referral.
If you are 21 and older, you do not need to have a referral to see a mental health provider.
