Be Smart Medicaid Family Planning for Providers

The Be Smart Family Planning Waiver program is designed to reduce unintended pregnancies and improve the wellbeing of children and families in N.C. by extending eligibility for family planning services to eligible women ages 19 through 55 and men ages 19 through 60 who meet the eligibility requirements for participation.

Provider participation in the Be Smart program is open to all Medicaid enrolled providers whose licensure and accreditations allows them to provide family planning services. There are no additional enrollment requirements for Medicaid providers who are currently enrolled to provide family planning services. Family Planning Waiver Renewal

Since the Family Planning Waiver program began in October 2005, the State has enrolled an estimated 70,321 women and 8,743 men into the program.

The BE SMART program has been extended until June 30, 2011. An application will be submitted to CMS to continue the program through a State Eligibility Option for Family Planning Services (State Plan Amendment). If approved, there is no anticipated end-date for continuation of the new family planning program.
