Carolina Dental Home Program

Pediatricians and Dentists Working Together

Carolina Dental Home is a pilot program in Craven, Jones, and Pamlico counties.  Physicians and dentists work together to provide dental care for Medicaid children from birth to three years old.  The goals of the program are to:

  • Stop tooth decay before it starts.
  • Treat tooth decay early, before it affects the child’s health.

N.C. Carolina Dental Home is a partnership with local pediatricians, family physicians and dentists.  They identify children age zero to three years old who are at high risk for tooth decay.  The physician will check the child’s teeth and risk factors during a well child visit.  Once the child has been identified by the physician with a need to see the dentist, the child is referred to a dentist for a dental exam.  The dentist provides a dental exam.  If treatment is needed, the dentist will provide the dental care or refer the child to a pediatric dentist for specialized dental care.  The physician and dentist work together as a team to prevent and/or reduce dental decay in young child.

The N.C. Oral Health Section, partnering with the UNC-CH Gillings School of Global Public Health, designed this pilot program to improve access to dental care for young children.   The objective of the Carolina Dental Home program is to identify best practices for treating and preventing tooth decay in young children.  This pilot program has been funded by Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).
