Black Mountain Neuro-Medical Treatment Center provides services and supports to individuals and families affected by lifelong disabilities and by Alzheimer’s disease. The center has 167 beds. It is committed to excellence in care and
treatment based on a person- and family-centered philosophy. In addition to direct services, the center provides family and community education in support of effective partnerships to build community capacity. No one is denied admission because of inability to pay. The Alzheimer’s program serves 62 counties in the central and western part of the state.
The Alzheimer’s Respite Program serves people from all 100 counties. At present, the specialized developmental disabilities program serves medically fragile and aging people with development disabilities from all 62 counties in the central and western part of the state.
The neuro-medical treatment centers are inspected at least annually by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
Inspectors may also conduct inspections in order to assess problems that arise between recertification visits. CMS decides whether the neuro-medical treatment centers are in compliance with standards and thereby eligible to receive payment through Medicare and/or Medicaid. Copies of CMS inspections are available from the DHHS Public Affairs Office at 919-733-9190.
The Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act is a law passed in 1987 that relates to standards of care in nursing homes. The neuro-medical treatment centers are certified by CMS under this act. The North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation is the local agency that conducts on-site visits at least annually in order to determine compliance. Please see the Facility News section for information related to the most recent surveys.
If any deaths occur in the center, or if there are any significant patient injuries or significant events involving staff, these will be reported on this page (beginning in January 2008).
Information related to deaths may be obtained from the Chief Medical Examiner's Office at http://ocme.dhhs.nc.gov/ or at 919-743-9000 and/or with permission granted from the patient/resident or their legally responsible person in accordance with NC General Statute 122C-52(e) and 42 Code of Federal Regulations Chapter 7.
