Data on Cherry Hospital

Cherry Hospital was originally part of a segregated hospital system, serving African-Americans.  The first patients were admitted in 1880.  It now serves 38 eastern North Carolina counties. Cherry has 197 beds.

The psychiatric hospitals are inspected on a regular basis by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). external link graphic Inspectors may also conduct inspections in order to assess problems that arise between recertification visits.  CMS decides whether the hospitals are in compliance with standards and graphic of Cherry Hospitalthereby eligible to receive payment through Medicare and/or Medicaid.  The hospitals are also inspected by the Joint Commission, external link graphic an independent not-for-profit organization that accredits health care organizations. CRIPA

The U.S. Department of Justice is authorized under the Civil Rights of Institutionalized Persons Act (CRIPA) to conduct investigations related to conditions in State or locally operated institutions.  In the spring of 2002, the N.C.  psychiatric hospitals were visited and a report was issued in March, 2004

The Division of State Operated Healthcare Facilities has organized a compliance team to assist the psychiatric hospitals in determining compliance with the CRIPA standards. This team consists of DSOHF employees as well as contracted subject matter experts.
