Work First

What is Work First?
Is there a means by which I can receive assistance if I experience a temporary crisis with employment?

Question: What is Work First?
Answer: Work First is North Carolina's plan to help families move off welfare and into jobs. To help families reach their self-sufficiency goals, Work First provides employment services, other supportive services, and time-limited cash assistance to families and children under the age of 18. Families are referred to Child Support to get additional financial support for children. A family must meet income and resource rules. Please visit the Work First page or contact your local county Department of Social Services for more information.

Question: Is there a means by which I can receive assistance if I experience a temporary crisis with employment?
Answer: The Benefit Diversion Program offers families one-time cash assistance and up to three months of Medicaid to meet needs which are related to maintaining or accepting employment or have occurred during a short break between jobs. Families who are waiting for other financial assistance such as insurance settlements or social security benefits may also be eligible.
