SOMEDAY YOU MAY BE HARASSED

Someday you may be faced with a situation like these:

  • You may be fired from a job because someone doesn’t like your race, sex, religion, creed, national origin, age, color, or handicapping condition.
  • You may have co-workers who constantly harass you, or try to convert you to their point of view.
  • A supervisor might express disapproval of your religion and make it clear that you would get better treatment if you both shared the same faith.
  • Your supervisor or a coworker might sexually harass you.

If some type of workplace harassment ever happens to you, you will be faced with a difficult set of decisions. Think about the questions below and how you might answer them if you are ever confronted with one of these types of situations. You might think about a situation you have experienced in the past as you read through the list. Or if you have not experienced problems, you have probably heard of some coworkers' experiences that you can think about in terms of "What if that had happened to me?"

Check the reactions you think you might have.

WHAT DO YOU WANT? YES NO
Would you just want the harassment to stop?
Would you want the harasser(s) disciplined?
Would you want a transfer?
Would you want the harasser transferred from your department?
If you were fired, would you want your old job back?
If you were fired, would you try for compensation for lost wages or other damages?

As we begin to discuss specific steps you can take, keep these general types of questions in mind. If you are ever confronted with workplace harassment, your friends and relatives may start giving you advice and things may snowball pretty quickly. Try to remember to step back and ask yourself these types of questions first.

Take the time to figure out what you want before taking action!

In the next section, we'll talk about the options you have once you have figured out what outcome you want to seek. Click on the forward arrow to continue to the next section, Steps to Take if Harassed.
