Lesson 2: Steps
Section D: What Supervisors Need to Do
-- Page 1 of 4 Pages --

As a supervisor, you have an important role in workplace harassment situations. In Lesson 3 "Prevention" you'll learn some ways to create an atmosphere that may prevent harassment situations.

But, if you are faced with a harassment situation in your work unit, you'll need to be aware of steps and actions you'll need to take.

Policy:
First, if you have not already done so, take a few minutes now to go to the Reference Section and print out the "Employee Grievance Policy" and a simple-to-read set of "Questions and Answers on Unlawful Workplace Harassment Complaints and Concerns" for future reference. You may want to take the time to read them over thoroughly now, or look through them and file for easy reference.

Scales of Justice Personal Liability:
Be aware that you are at great risk personally if you are accused of harassment. If found guilty, you could be sued and found liable for damages. So, be very aware of how you treat employees. Make sure that you deal with all employees and applicants with fairness, respect, and equal treatment.

We will discuss more of the issues related to fair policies in the prevention lesson.
