Facilitating the Adult Learner


Course Description

This is a four-day course designed to enhance presentation skills. The participant will learn how to assess the audience and subject matter and tailor training techniques to enhance transfer of learning.


General Course Objectives

At the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Identify six principles of adult learning.
  • Describe the characteristics of an effective trainer.
  • Describe three differences in the way people learn.
  • Observe a model of how people learn.
  • Develop strategies to better manage difficult training situations.
  • Discuss the importance of training transfer to adult learning.
  • Discuss the role of the facilitator as an agent to learning.
  • Develop a personalized action plan to increase self-confidence as a trainer.


Accelerated Learning Objectives

By the end of this training, learners should be able to:

  • Describe at least three characteristics of Accelerated Learning.
  • Make a mind map.
  • List at least three uses for a mind map.
  • Describe action learning and demonstrate an action learning exercise.
  • Discuss how memory devices can be used in training.
  • Demonstrate use of metaphors in training.
  • List at least five tips each for the making of transparencies, PowerPoint presentations or flipcharts.


Intended Audience:

Full-time trainers and staff who develop or conduct training occasionally.
