An
irate parent stormed into the classroom recently and slammed a teacher
against the wall. The teacher was treated for cuts and bruises at
a local medical facility, and returned to the classroom the next
day. The parent was arrested for assault and the child has been
transferred to another facility at the family's request.
Aides
witnessed the assault, subdued the irate parent, and called for
medical help. One of the aides said that the parent had been calling
the school and e-mailing the director for weeks. The parent had
become increasingly upset about a change in her child's placement
at the school. The school director thought that the parent had accepted
the new plan and was encouraged when she planned to volunteer in
the classroom on that day.
Staff
are working with the other students and parents to address their
concerns and deal with the other students' feelings about witnessing
the event. "Parents will be attending a meeting later this week
to discuss the incident and review our violence prevention and response
plan to allay any concerns over their students' future safety,"
the director said. "We are all very sorry that the incident occurred,
we applaud our dedicated teacher's immediate return to the classroom,
and we want to make sure that the transferred student is placed
in the best situation for all concerned," the director added.
