Nurse Extern Program
Get the psychiatric nursing experience you want in the Central Regional Hospital Nurse Extern Program. For 10 weeks during the summer, you can combine knowledge gained in the academic setting with hands-on experience in a clinical area of your choice.
In the first two weeks, you will be oriented to Central Regional Hospital and to your specific clinical area. While you are gaining on-the-job experience during the externship, you can also enhance your clinical experience by attending teleconferences and special lectures.
Central Regional Hospital serves as the regional psychiatric hospital for 26 counties in Central Region of North Carolina. In collaboration with community-based mental health
programs, we provide evaluation, treatment and rehabilitative services for the mentally ill.
We use a holistic treatment approach to restore the physical, emotional and spiritual well
being of our patients.
Here are some of the benefits:
- Earn while you learn! No academic pressure!
- One-on-one precepting. Your "buddy" will be an experienced RN.
- Introduction to a clinical area beyond clinical rotations in an academic setting.
- Opportunity to experience a specialized area of psychiatry (acute admissions,
child/adolescent, geropsychiatry, forensic).
- Gain confidence in making decisions while learning communication skills that you will use during your senior year and throughout your career.
If you would like to apply, you must:
