A national campaign targeting youth and community acceptance of persons living with mental illness was launched today - "What a difference a friend makes".  North Carolina contributed to and was instrumental in this campaign development / research by participating in a 6-state pilot initiative in 2005.  Please access the PSAs and other resources shared as part of the campaign here (pdf file).  Watch for the airing of public service announcements via local media markets. A similar initiative will be implemented in North Carolina using campaign materials and communications networks.  The NC campaign is targeted for Mental Health Awareness Month in May. Elimination of Barriers Initiative (EBI) was a 3-year federal pilot project aimed at identifying public education approaches that work to reduce the stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness. The EBI demonstration project was designed to test models and public education materials, including: radio; television; and print media public service announcements (PSAs).

North Carolina was one of the eight (8) states included in the pilot from around the country. The data and information from the pilot states was used to provide a foundation for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA) to launch a nationwide campaign in an effort to shift public attitudes and behaviors regarding mental illness.

For more information about North Carolina’s role in this project, contact the Training Team at dmh.training@ncmail.net or call 919-715-2780.
