Training

DMH/DD/SAS training involves a North Carolina Learning Community (see logo, above). This community is comprised of the Division's training team, the Division's training partners, and individual trainers. Together, we serve to enhance the skills of the workforce through the following training programs:

Training Programs

Note: Clinical Skills Applications are no longer accepted.

Training Questions and Answers

The Q&As below reflect a compilation of questions received and answers needed. Frequent reference (below) is made to the following documents:

  • Medicaid enhanced service definitions. Visit this website to learn more about these final approved (3/27/06) service definitions.
  • Enhanced Services Implementation Update #10: Courses which Satisfy the Training Requirements for Service Definitions.
  • A new Implementation Update will better answer or clarify the answers to a lot of questions below. We apologize about the delay in posting this new implementation update on training.

Questions:

  1. When and where will various trainings in the Medicaid enhanced service definitions, person centered thinking and planning, and crisis response be given or do we have to develop our own trainings?

  2. What about that three hours of optional training that may be delivered via web-based learning programs?

  3. To whom do I submit my curricula?

  4. What is the status of the three hour “PCP Process in NC”?

  5. And the Person Centered Thinking training, there is still no endorsement requirement on that curriculum, right?

  6. Are these adjustments meaning that a previously "endorsed" trainer by the State can now train a private provider to be a trainer of staff and they will be able to officially "bless" the staff as being trained, for example, under CSS-Individual

  7. What are the qualifications for enhanced service definition trainers? (this includes developmental disabilities training)

  8. Are there any "train-the-trainers" training coming up?

  9. Are you still accepting clinical skills series applications for the Medicaid enhanced service definitions?

  10. What kinds of training fulfill the "2-5 hours in other topics related to service and population(s) being served" (from Enhanced Services Implementation Update #10)?

Answers:

  1. When and where will various trainings in the Medicaid enhanced service definitions, person centered thinking and planning, and crisis response be given or do we have to develop our own trainings?
There is no need to develop your own curricula and train your own staff unless you want to (some trainings require inclusion of "minimally required training elements"). There are a few different ways to seek out training opportunities. You may contact individual trainers by email, view the training calendars or training brochures of one of our training partners, and you may visit our training calendar. Note: many of the individual trainers and training partners also offer person centered planning, person centered thinking, crisis response training.

  2. What about that three hours of optional training that may be delivered via web-based learning programs? We are waiting for the next Enhanced Services Implementation Update to be posted on the web regarding training. Until that Update is posted, we cannot answer this question.

  3. To whom do I submit my curricula? The Division is not approving any curricula.

  4. What is the status of the three hour “PCP Process in NC”? Providers fear not meeting the deadline for training. Continue to visit this website for updates regarding the PCP Process in NC. We hope to have some news about that in January.

  5. And the Person Centered Thinking training, there is still no endorsement requirement on that curriculum, right. Correct. Those trainers offering this training should give participants a certificate that meets these requirements (the pre-test, post-test and 70% pass rate do not apply). See more Q&As on this topic...

  6. Are these adjustments meaning that a previously "endorsed" trainer by the State can now train a private provider to be a trainer of staff and they will be able to officially "bless" the staff as being trained, for example, under CSS-Individual?
Yes, that is right. The "official blessing" is a certificate that must meet certain requirements.

  7. What are the qualifications for enhanced service definition trainers?
We are unable to answer fully this question right now (1-2-07). In the past, these have been the qualifications. But, things are changing. There will be more information on this topic in the very near future so please continue to visit our website. See more Q&As on this topic... (in particular, questions pertaining to CAP-MR/DD

  8. Are there any "train-the-trainers" training coming up?
There are no "train-the-trainers" trainings planned through the Division for Targeted Case Management, person-centered training, nor any of the Medicaid enhanced service definitions. You may either develop your own curriculum or contact either formerly endorsed trainers or one of our training partners directly.

  9. Are you still accepting clinical skills series applications for the Medicaid enhanced service definitions? No. The Division is no longer accepting applications for the "train-the-trainer" trainings in the Medicaid enhanced service definitions. Instead, visit our clinical skills series training web page for how to develop your own curricula to use for training others. See more Q&As on this topic...

  10. What kinds of training fulfill the "2-5 hours in other topics related to service and population(s) being served" (from Enhanced Services Implementation Update #10)? It is important that training in "other" topics be unique, related to the service and population(s) being served, and not related to: NCI, CPR, or first aid. What we mean by "unique" is that one certificate of completion for training may not be used twice (e.g., a certificate of completion for training in person centered thinking may not also be used to fulfill the requirement for training in "other" topics). Training in "other" topics is designed to deepen providers' understanding of the particular services and populations they serve and as long as there are separate certificates of completion for these "other" hours in the provider's personnel file then auditors may grant wide latitude in the "other" training topics.
