Direct Care Work Force

Direct care workers are nurse aides, personal care attendants and other unlicensed paraprofessionals who assist individuals with disabilities and frail older adults with daily living activities such as bathing, dressing, or taking care of the home. Some direct care workers also provide health-related tasks such as taking blood pressure or making sterile dressing changes.

North Carolina, like many other states, is facing a severe shortage of direct care workers. The Office of Long-Term Services and Supports is working along with other state divisions to attract new individuals to the field of direct care and focusing on ways to retain current direct care workers. These activities are occurring through established programs, grants, research and data collection.
