Cleveland County Salmonella outbreak associated with church barbeque

Raleigh, N.C. - Public health authorities are investigating reports of illness following a church barbeque fund raiser held on Saturday September 7, 2013 at the Sandy Plains Baptist Church in Shelby, NC. As of Tuesday, September 17, nine cases had been reported, all confirmed in the laboratory. Five of them had been hospitalized.

The Cleveland County and Rutherford County Health Departments in collaboration with the NC Department of Health and Human Services Division of Public Health are investigating this outbreak and have the following recommendations:

  • If you attended the event and became ill with intestinal symptoms such as diarrhea or vomiting, consult your healthcare provider and inform them of your exposure at this event.
  • Persons who brought home food purchased at the fund raiser should discard it and not consume any remaining food.
  • Healthcare providers should inform their local health department of any associated case, whether confirmed or suspected.
