Radon Measurement and Mitigation Scholarships Available for Minority Contractors

The North Carolina Radon Program is offering $800 scholarships to increase the number of minority radon measurement and mitigation providers throughout the state and to increase awareness of the importance of testing for and mitigation of elevated radon levels in homes in minority communities.

The North Carolina Radon Program is offering $800 scholarships to increase the number of minority radon measurement and mitigation providers throughout the state and to increase awareness of the importance of testing for and mitigation of elevated radon levels in homes in minority communities.

NCDHHS' Radon Program, in collaboration with its partners, protects the health and safety of all North Carolinians and provides essential human services. The program focuses on empowering all North Carolinians with information on how to reduce the incidence of radon-induced lung cancer. Statewide survey data shows that more efforts are needed to increase the knowledge of radon’s danger among minority communities. The NC Radon Program offers these scholarships to increase the number of minority certified radon measurement and mitigation professionals in North Carolina, and to address this need.

Funds for this scholarship will be provided directly to the National Radon Program Services at Kansas State University. Funds are from the US EPA State Indoor Radon Grant program and the NCDHHS Radon Program. After being accepted by the Radon Program, each participant will be responsible for a non-refundable $50 registration fee, and, upon successful completion of the training, exam fees of about $150 each, depending on who administers the exam.

The training is administered entirely online by the National Radon Program Services. Grant funds partially support the registration fee to become both a certified radon measurement provider and certified radon mitigator. Participants are expected to 1) complete both measurement courses within a 6-month period; 2) take the certification exam with one of the nationally recognized radon certification programs (measurement exam and mitigation exam are each about $150), and 3) serve as a certified radon measurement and/or mitigation provider within six months after completion of the program.

Recipients of this grant will be selected based on the following criteria:

  • Experience working in the construction trades (e.g. home inspection, carpentry, plumbing, etc.);
  • Ability to network within minority communities in North Carolina.
  • Access to a computer and internet to complete the online training program.
  • Provision of two references, with at least one reference being someone who can speak to your work experience and work ethic. Please include contact information for references including phone number and email address.

Applicants are required to submit a 250-500 word essay discussing 1) how they meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities for the scholarship, including number of years of experience in construction trade, and 2) the role they hope to play in advancing radon testing and mitigation within the North Carolina minority communities. Applications must include applicant name, phone number, email address, the essay, and the name and contact information for the two references. Applications should be submitted no later than 5 p.m. on Monday, June 27, 2022. Send applications including essay as a Microsoft document via email to Phillip.Gibson@dhhs.nc.gov.
