About the Facility
Broughton Hospital is one of three regional psychiatric hospitals with statutory responsibility for operating as a part of the Division of State Operated Healthcare Facilities within the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services to provide help and support to North Carolinians and their families experiencing mental illness. The hospital serves the western thirty-seven counties of North Carolina, approximately 35% of the total population, as part of the state's system of care and treatment for persons with mental illness. Broughton Hospital, as part of the state’s mental health system, participates in a continuum of services that originates with local managing entities in western North Carolina. This local service is designated as the single portal of entry for referrals to Broughton Hospital. Prior to admission communication is encouraged between this hospital and the referring agent. This includes verbal contact with admitting services and documentation sent with the patient as to history, reason for admission, medical condition and prospective needs.

Services
Broughton Hospital offers the following mental health services: Adult Admissions, Geriatric, Adult Extended Treatment, Adolescent, and Medical/Psychology. In addition, Broughton Hospital offers specialized services for deaf consumers with mental illness from any county in North Carolina. A comprehensive array of physical, diagnostic and therapeutic approaches is available, including individual, group, behavior, milieu therapy, occupational, recreational, and creative arts therapies.
Within each service one or more interdisciplinary treatment teams coordinate assessment and bio-psychosocial care services. Psychosocial interventions (PSIs) are provided for patients to help them increase the skills they will need to live in the community after they are discharged. To this end, Broughton Hospital operates treatment malls wherein patients go off the units to enhance opportunities for skill development.
Beyond direct care services the hospital serves as a regional educational facility. Professional training is provided within the various services (and with appropriate professional departmental oversight) to clinical psychology interns, to social work interns, to residents in psychiatry and to pharmacy, dental, medical record and nursing students among others. The holdings of the McKee Library are supplemented by interlibrary loan capability. Computer searches of the medical and psychological literature are available through the library.
Eligibility and Admission Criteria
Any individual regardless of financial resources or insurance status who meets the following criteria:
- is dangerous to self or others, and;
- has been assessed and determined to meet the diagnostic criteria for a mental illness (including individuals with medical and/or physical complications that are within the parameters of what the state hospital can manage), and;
- cannot be safely provided treatment at a lower level of care
North Carolina law provides for two types of admission procedures, voluntary and involuntary.

Broughton Hospital is a regional psychiatric facility operated by North Carolina’s Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Use Services. Visitation Information
All visitors, vendors, and other non hospital employees are asked to first check in at the Broughton Hospital Telecommunications/Information area located in the first floor lobby of the Avery Building (which is the large building with the striped dome on top). Directions to specific areas of the hospital can be obtained at that time.
