April 19, 2018 — Secretary Mandy Cohen, M.D., and DHHS employees participated in the inaugural 5 Factors 5K Walk & Run, held April 14 on the Dorothea Dix Campus in Raleigh.

“Parenting can be hard,” Secretary Cohen said before the event began. “It takes all of us to make sure we’re supporting our children, families and communities to make sure children, no matter what zip code they’re born in, can be safe, healthy and loved.”

The 5K highlighted five protective factors that increase the health and well-being of children:

  • parental resilience,
  • social and emotional competence of children,
  • parental knowledge of child development and parenting skills,
  • concrete support for parents,
  • and social connections.

The event, which had 190 registered participants, highlighted the connection between these factors and the social and emotional benefits of running and walking.

Proceeds from the 5K will help Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina invest in innovative programs proven to prevent child maltreatment.
