Melvin L. Williams Jr.

Melvin L. Williams Jr. is the Director of the Office of Economic Opportunity. Williams brings 26 years of government experience to the Office of Economic Opportunity.

Williams previously worked at the NC Department of Transportation for three years as an On the Job Training Manager in the Office of Civil Rights. He spent 13 years at the Governor’s Crime Commission as a Training Specialist, working on crime prevention with non-profits, state and local government agencies and universities. Williams also spent five years with North Carolina Emergency Management and four with the Department of Corrections as a Community Development Specialists and Program Manager.

An active member of the community, Williams founded P.R.O.U.D. (Protector, Resourceful, Ongoing, Understanding and Dedicated) Fathers and the Father/Son Book Club in Raleigh. He organized a charity golf tournament to raise awareness and education for prostate cancer with the help of his fraternity, Omega Psi Phi, the NC Minority Prostate Cancer Awareness Action Team and the American Cancer Society.

Williams attended UNC-Chapel Hill on a football scholarship and earned his bachelor’s degree in radio, television and motion pictures, and earned a master’s degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He’s a life member of the UNC-CH General Alumni Association, Ram’s Club member and chaired the UNC Black Alumni Reunion Committee in 2005. He lives in Raleigh with his wife and daughter, a hurdler at N.C. State University.
