State Aging Services Plan North Carolina law (N.S.G.S. 143B-181.1A(a) requires the Division of Aging and Adult Services to produce a State Aging Services Plan. The 2007-2011 State Aging Services Plan, entitled The Aging of North Carolina, is available on-line. For further information on state aging service plans, contact Dennis Streets. Baby Boomers at Mid-Life: The Future of Aging in North Carolina and The Future of Aging in North Carolina: Responding to the Challenges and Opportunities Presented by Baby Boomers at Mid-Life are two recent reports of the Division of Aging and Adult Services, prepared by the Center for Aging Research and Educational Services (CARES) of the UNC-CH School of Social Work. The first report profiles North Carolina boomers in terms of basic demographics, financial security, and health status. The companion report draws on key points from the first report and presents them in a public-private policy framework to guide individuals, families, businesses, communities and government in meeting the responsibilities and realizing the promise of an aging society. For more information about this work, contact Dennis Streets. Families and ElderCare: Issues Facing Families Who Are Caring for Older Relatives is a collection of short articles that consider many of the issues facing families who are caring for older relatives. The 24 articles were produced as a project of the North Carolina Eldercare Coalition, supported in part by a U.S. Administration on Aging grant. They were prepared by the N.C. Division of Aging and Adult Services and the Gerontology Program at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. TheSecond 50 Years: Enhancing Employment Opportunities for Older Workers is a 22-page report of the Governor's Older Workers Task Force, prepared by the Division of Aging and Adult Services in conjunction with the Governor's Commission on Workforce Preparedness. Its contents include a letter from Governor Hunt, a letter from Task Force Chair Sarah T. Morrow, a list of Task Force members, a summary of comments from regional forums and focus groups, and an overview and recommendations in these areas: making state policy that supports employers and older workers; paying for retirement: continued employment, pensions, and Social Security; obtaining information on the characteristics and needs of the older work force; helping older workers update skills and pursue new careers; and increasing awareness of the value of older workers. A companion report is Older Workers in North Carolina, a 16-page paper prepared in April 1996 by Dr. Robert L. Clark and M. Melinda Pitts of North Carolina State University. This served as a resource document for the Task Force. The Division's contact is Debbie Brantley.
