J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center provides comprehensive residential care and treatment for 350 people with developmental disabilities from 37 counties in the state's Western Region. To be eligible for admission to the Riddle Center, a person must have a primary diagnosis of profound or severe mental retardation and an accompanying medical or behavioral challenge. No one is denied admission because of inability to pay.
The developmental centers are inspected at least annually by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
Inspectors may also conduct inspections in order to assess problems that arise between recertification visits. CMS decides whether the developmental centers are in
compliance with standards and thereby eligible to receive payment through Medicare and/or Medicaid. Copies of CMS inspections are available from the DHHS Public Affairs Office at 919-733-9190.
If any deaths occur in the hospital, or if there are any significant patient injuries or significant events involving staff, these will be reported on this page (beginning in January 2008).
