
Chronic health conditions now account for more than 75% of illnesses and health care costs for state employees in North Carolina. DHHS employees have a higher prevalence of chronic diseases and obesity than other state employees. Most of these diseases can be prevented or improved with healthier lifestyle choices: being active, eating healthy food, quitting tobacco use, and managing stress.

The DHHS Wellness Program was launched in 2005 by the Department to provide support in the workplace that would assist DHHS employees in taking a more active role in maintaining or achieving good health. The Program was developed by the Division of Public Health in partnership with the NC State Health Plan.
Worksite wellness programs have been shown to improve employee health, boost morale, and increase productivity. Wellness programs can support employees in reaching their personal health goals and improving their quality of life. Comprehensive wellness programs also play a critical role in controlling health care costs for both employees and employers.
