Jail Diversion

FAQs

Jail diversion programs help people who are arrested and jailed as a result of behaviors caused by their mental illness.  They help people with mental illness who are in jail by working to get the person out of jail and into treatment, when this can be done at little risk to the public’s safety. 

Jail diversion programs can help people who –

• Have a serious mental illness and,
• Are in jail on a minor charge, and
• Are willing to agree to receive treatment for their mental illness, and who
• Would not be a risk to the public, if they were released from jail. 

Jail diversion programs are not for people who –

• Do not have a mental illness, or
• Are not currently in jail, or
• Are not  willing to cooperate with treatment of their mental illness, or
• Are a significant risk to the safety of the public, or
• Have been charged with a very serious crime, like murder or armed robbery. 

Jail diversion services are available in some, but not all, counties in North Carolina.  If you or your loved one is in need of jail diversion services, please call 919-715-2771 to see if a jail diversion program exists in your area, and to be referred to this program.
