******Alert #313******

The Sheriff of Carroll County, VA, just across the border from Mount Airy, NC, this week issued the following announcement concerning two alleged roofing scammers from the Statesville, NC area. The two men were arrested and charged thanks to the quick thinking of two older consumers whom they allegedly scammed only a few days before.

PRESS RELEASE

The Hillsville Police Department charged two North Carolina men with Grand Larceny by false pretenses after investigating a report by two elderly women that they had been the victims of a recent scam. On June 6, 2013, two men stopped at their residence in Hillsville and informed the two women that their roof was in desperate need of repair. The two elderly women could not go outside and look at their roof and believed that the two men were telling the truth. After allowing the men up on the roof for twenty minutes, the men presented a bill for $3800 but advised the ladies that they had only done $2800 worth of work, saving them $1000.

Several days later, the women began to believe that they may have been the victim of construction scammers and reported the incident to Sheriff J. B. Gardner. On Monday, June 17, 2013 the two men returned to the women's residence and wanted to do more work for more money. The two ladies realized that these were the same men from the earlier incident, detained the pair with a promise of more work, and, while pretending to call a friend, called Sheriff Gardner and advised him that the men were back.

Sheriff Gardner contacted Captain Alderman who was close by in the area and Officer James Dalton and Captain Alderman blocked the white Chevrolet pickup in the drive way. 44 year old, John Ervin Ellis, Jr. of Statesville, N.C. and 65 year old Glenn Dale Anderson of Troutman, N.C. were arrested for Grand Larceny by False Pretenses by Capt. Alderman, Officer Dalton and Sheriff Gardner.

Both men are being held in the New River Valley Regional Jail under $5000 bond.
