Jan. 17, 2019 – The State Fiscal Year 2018 Medicaid Annual Report was issued in December, showcasing how Medicaid makes a difference to people and communities throughout North Carolina.

The report, which covers July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018, includes Medicaid financial results, and provides descriptions of the variety of benefits and services offered through Medicaid.

This year, the report includes more beneficiary profiles that illustrate how lives can be significantly changed thanks to Medicaid.

Other highlights include:

• During SFY 2018, Medicaid and NC Health Choice provided valuable health programs and services to over 2 million North Carolinians.

• North Carolina Medicaid and NC Health Choice programs ended the year $45 million under budget, the fifth consecutive year NC Medicaid finished with cash-on-hand. This accomplishment was due to several factors, including building on well-timed investments in financial technology and talent.

• Working with beneficiaries, providers, advocacies, state leaders and others vested in making North Carolina a healthier place, NC Medicaid introduced several improvements over the past year. These included:
    o  Introducing tactics to reduce the oversupply of prescription opioids and the diversion of prescription drugs, and increasing community awareness and prevention;

    o  Expanding provider reimbursement opportunities to increase access to mobile oral health services for beneficiaries in long-term care facilities; and

    o  Adding Innovations waiver slots, per state law, to provide an alternative to institutionalization to more people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and substance use issues.

Additionally, Medicaid volunteer activities are recapped in the report, showing that employee dedication goes beyond daily responsibilities and benefits the communities where they live and work.
