State Employees Combined Campaign Overcomes Adversity to Exceed 2017 Total

Jan. 23, 2019 – The 2018 State Employees Combined Campaign has come to an end, raising $312,842 in donations. That’s more than 2017’s total of $304,312, despite two hurricanes creating hardship for employees. 

The $312,842 in donations is the highest for the campaign since 2010. The SECC supports more than 900 eligible local, national and international charities, and many of them support the work of DHHS.

“This year’s campaign was a fantastic success, especially considering the hardships our team members faced,” said DHHS Secretary Mandy Cohen, MD. “We weathered hurricanes and severe weather, yet still found a way to give more than any other time in the past several years.”

Approximately 2,200 donors participated in the 2018 campaign, equaling 14 percent of the DHHS workforce. That’s the most donors since 2009 and the highest percentage since 2008.

“Congratulations to everyone who participated in this year’s campaign, including the team captains for all their extra effort,” said Chris Egan, DHHS Combined Campaign Co-Chair. “The money raised will help various organizations respond to the critical needs of people across the state.”

Participants in this year’s campaign were automatically entered in a contest to win a 50” Vizio 4K TV at the close of the campaign. The winners from each region were:

  • Central: Lotta Crabtree, Office of General Counsel
  • East: Cynthia Coppage, Longleaf Neuro-Medical Treatment Center
  • West: Janet Hannah, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services, Hickory

“I gave because I wanted to help,” said Crabtree. “I didn’t realize there was a drawing for a TV. I was so excited when I found out!”

The 2018 campaign, “The Power of Giving,” represented the campaign’s belief in the generosity that exists in North Carolina.
