As North Carolinians gather this Halloween weekend for parties and celebrations, NCDHHS urges people to engage in safe and sober driving behavior.
The annual Halloween “Booze It & Lose It” campaign is underway, reminding drivers of the dangers of driving while impaired and encouraging North Carolinians to take necessary actions to stay safe this upcoming holiday weekend.
Last week, to kick off this year’s campaign, state officials from NCDHHS and Governor’s Highway Safety Program hosted a press conference at the NC State Fairgrounds. See photos from the event below.
The campaign runs from Oct. 26 to Nov. 1, when law enforcement officers in all 100 North Carolina counties are increasing patrols and conducting sobriety checkpoints to identify impaired drivers and prevent crashes.
Driving while under the influence affects the key skills needed to drive safely: coordination, focus and reactivity. Even consuming a small amount of alcohol impacts ability to operate a vehicle.
This weekend, it is important to plan ahead so that you don’t have to get behind the wheel of a car after a night of drinking or get into a vehicle with someone who is not sober. Have a sober friend or family member drive you home or use a rideshare service. Impairment affects your judgement, so never leave the decision until the moment you need to drive home.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of North Carolina’s Breath Alcohol Testing Mobile Unit Operations, bringing resources directly to law enforcement officers and communities while supporting education, partnership and service to North Carolinians. NCDHHS' Forensic Tests for Alcohol (FTA) Branch works to reduce impaired driving via training for law enforcement officers, educational events and other support services.
