Community Conversation

Message from Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Director Tony Davis

Community Conversations are sessions scheduled in every region of the state of North Carolina. They are small sessions with 8–10 participants per meeting, lasting about two hours. We’ll hold multiple sessions in each area so everyone who wants to participate can join. For an example, if 40 people in Wilmington want to attend, we’ll host four sessions there. ASL interpreters and CART services will be provided at every meeting and if you need other accommodations please let us know. Our goal is to listen and learn from you about: Barriers to communication access in daily life and services you need that DSDHH does not currently provide. Examples of issues you might share:

  • That you did not have an ASL interpreter for a medical appointment.
  • A hospital used VRI, video remote interpreting, instead of in-person interpreter. Even though you requested the in-person interpreters.
  • An interpreter wasn’t provided for a driving test or for a court date.
  • Your child needed an American Sign Language interpreter in school but didn’t get one.
  • There were a lack of affordable hearing aid options.
  • You want to learn American Sign Language as a family.

Your input will be confidential. Names will not be used in data collection. We’ll use your feedback to create a Strategic Plan for DSDHH and share results with you - the community. Please also join us for this opportunity to share your experiences. If you have a specific group or location where you’d like to host a community conversation, please reach out to us. We want to know. You can reach out to us through email DSDHH.State.Information@dhhs.nc.gov. Or you can reach out to us through phone at 919-527-6930.
