The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is seeking applicants to develop recommendations of Governor Pat McCrory’s Task Force on Mental Health and Substance Use, including employing case management and other targeted strategies to help those with mental health and substance use issues across the state. 

Dr. Angela Black Smith, PharmD, whose research and analysis could save the state $2.5 million a year in prescription costs, recently won recognition as a recipient of the 2016 Governor’s Award for Excellence. 

Patients have been safely moved and now occupy the new Cherry Hospital as of Thursday, Sept. 29, 2016. The hospital, dedicated Aug. 30 in a ceremony attended by Gov. Pat McCrory, provides psychiatric care to individuals with the greatest need and  the least resources who live in 38 eastern North Carolina counties.

Governor Pat McCrory’s Task Force on Mental Health and Substance Use provided a legislative committee with an update of its work to improve mental/behavioral health services in North Carolina. The task force will present its final report to Governor McCrory in May.

Governor Pat McCrory announced today the Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice has received a $679,000 grant award to expand a specialty mental health probation pilot program to Brunswick, McDowell, Guilford, Mecklenburg, Orange and Durham counties.

The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services awarded $5,000 grants Thursday that will allow 11 counties to train paramedics in mental health crisis intervention.

Last week, Governor Pat McCrory signed an Executive Order creating a Mental Health and Substance Use Task Force that will be jointly co-chaired by Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Aldona Wos, M.D. and North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Martin.
