March 15, 2018 — Continuous improvement and professional development are among the top personnel priorities for the NC Department of Health and Human Services.

As a result, DHHS’ Division of Human Resources partnered in 2016 with North Carolina State University’s Office of Professional Development to plan a Management Development Certificate program for executive and mid-level managers. By the fall of 2017, a pilot program was in place.

The curriculum is designed to teach DHHS leaders how to manage and develop talented associates, manage programs and strategies in the most efficient and cost-effective ways, and promote the initiative of employees to meet current and future organizational challenges.

The 20 individuals from this graduating class were selected from more than 40 applicants from all divisions of NCDHHS. The program included six courses, taught over a three-month period. The courses offered a balanced mix of practical management aspects and interpersonal approaches to leading teams of employees. Specific topics included themes such as The Challenge of Change, Leading Millennials and Creative Conflict Management.

DHHS is sponsoring the Management Development Certificate Program again this spring for mid-level managers with a minimum of three years of DHHS service. Mid-level managers may nominate themselves or be nominated by their manager or executive leadership. The next two sessions with capacities of 20 participants each are scheduled for April 12, 19 and 26 and May 10, 17 and 24.  Details on how to apply for the spring sessions are available through division and facility offices. A selection committee reviews applications.

DHHS Secretary Mandy Cohen spoke to graduates and thanked them for their hard work and initiative before handing out certificates to each one.
