Medicaid

Medicaid is a health insurance program for low-income individuals and families who cannot afford health care costs.

NC Medicaid may help pay for certain medical expenses including:

  • Doctor Bills
  • Hospital Bills
  • Prescriptions (Excluding prescriptions for Medicare beneficiaries)
  • Vision Care
  • Dental Care
  • Medicare Premiums
  • Nursing Home Care
  • Personal Care Services (PCS), Medical Equipment, and Other Home Health Services
  • In-home care under the Community Alternatives Program (CAP)
  • Mental Health Care
  • Most medically necessary services for children under age 21

Coverage for certain health needs

NC Medicaid may also cover special services for people with certain health needs, including:

  • Serious mental illness (SMI)
  • Severe substance use disorders (SUD)
  • Intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD)
  • Traumatic brain injuries (TBI)

This health plan is called Behavioral Health and Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities Tailored Plans (or “Tailored Plans”). They start July 1, 2024. Learn more about Tailored Plans.
