Dix Café Celebrates One Year Anniversary
The Dix Café celebrated its first anniversary on Aug. 10. Located on Raleigh’s Dorothea Dix campus, the café is operated by the Division of Services for the Blind’s Business Enterprise Program to provide hands-on training for legally blind individuals, as well as a food option for DHHS staff and visitors on the Dix campus in Raleigh.

Western Controller’s Office Conducts School Supply Drive
As part of its “helping others” campaign, the Western Controller’s Office in collected school supplies for students at Hallyburton Academy in Burke County who cannot attend a traditional school due to behavioral issues stemming from their home life. 

Over 6,500 school supply items were collected and distributed on Aug. 21. Items included headphones, bottled water, coloring pencils, spiral notebooks, black and blue pens, composition books and $100 of cash donations.

Broughton Hospital School Supply Drive
Broughton Hospital in Morganton collected school supplies during August and distributed them to two local elementary schools.

DVRS, DSB Staff Present at Raleigh Mayor’s Committee for Persons with Disabilities
Team members from DHHS’ Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services and the Division of Services for the Blind spoke at a July 24 event celebrating the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The event was hosted by the Raleigh Mayor’s Committee for Persons with Disabilities.

Ashley Hayes Chassereau, a Community Employment Program Specialist with DVRS, spoke about services that assist employers in hiring employees with disabilities. Betty Gholston, Chief of Rehabilitation Field Services at DSB, discussed the tools and technology available to help individuals with vision loss successfully contribute to the workplace.
