Two North Carolinians have received the Stephen E. Sallee Assistive Technology Award for their efforts to promote access to and use of equipment that enhances the learning, working or daily living of those with disabilities. The awards were presented in September at the annual Assistive Technology (AT) Expo, which highlights assistive technologies that increase the capabilities of people living with disabilities and chronic conditions, helping them overcome barriers to communication, mobility, education, employment, and community living.

Tammy Youmans was recognized for her work helping students use assistive technology to learn alongside their peers. She worked as a physical therapist for 29 years with the Exceptional Children Division of Macon County Public Schools. Since her retirement, Youmans has helped her local church create a special program experience for children who are non-verbal.

The AT Awards of Excellence are named in honor of Dr. Stephen Sallee, one of the early advocates for assistive technology in North Carolina. Sallee was the founder of Solutions for Independence, an Independent Living Center in Winston-Salem and helped create the Assistive Technology Center in Winston-Salem.

The AT Expo is an annual event, sponsored by the NC Assistive Technology Program, that promotes independence for people with disabilities through access to technology. More than 500 attendees from across North Carolina and 22 other states participated in the event, which offered device demonstrations, showcased innovative new products, and featured presenters with lived experience. The event also provides a venue to celebrate the outstanding individuals and organizations that promote awareness of and access to AT throughout North Carolina.

The 2023 Stephen E. Sallee AT Awards of Excellence will be presented on Oct. 5 next year, when the McKimmon Center welcomes the AT Expo back as an in-person event in Raleigh.
